Shining a Light on Caregivers: The Nebraska Health Care Association’s Docuseries “People Worth Caring About”
The Nebraska Health Care Association (NHCA) has launched a compelling docuseries, People Worth Caring About, that provides a fresh perspective on the vital role of caregivers in nursing homes and other long term care settings. By telling the stories of the individuals who dedicate their lives to this profession, NHCA is fostering a greater understanding of the importance of caregiving and highlighting the humanity behind the work.
“We premiered the seven-part People Worth Caring About docuseries in its entirety at a formal, invitation-only event for our members and business partners,” said Lindsay Kant, NHCA’s Director of Membership. “Since then, we’ve been sharing individual episode highlights as social media reels, and several of our members have either hosted or are planning to show the docuseries in their local movie theater or at their facility. It’s also being used in healthcare-focused high school organizations and afterschool programs, reaching students as young as third grade. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s having the exact impact we’d hoped for – changing the way people view what it’s like to work and live in nursing homes and assisted living communities.”
At its core, People Worth Caring About is a celebration of caregivers. It highlights their dedication, compassion, and resilience—qualities that are often underappreciated or overlooked. In doing so, the series helps to:
- Humanize the Profession: Caregiving can be an abstract concept for those outside the industry. By showcasing real people and their stories, NHCA makes the profession tangible and relatable.
- Combat Stereotypes: Nursing home caregiving is often misunderstood or undervalued. The docuseries dispels myths by portraying the depth of skill, emotional intelligence, and commitment required to succeed in these roles.
- Inspire New Talent: For individuals considering careers in caregiving, seeing others thrive in the field can serve as powerful motivation.
- Boost Morale: Caregivers themselves benefit from the recognition, as it validates their hard work and demonstrates that their contributions are both noticed and appreciated.
Lessons for Providers
The success of NHCA’s docuseries offers a roadmap for other long term care providers seeking to elevate the caregiving profession. Here are some actionable ways providers can leverage similar projects to support recruitment and retention efforts:
- Share Authentic Stories Authenticity is key. Highlight real caregivers and residents, focusing on their day-to-day experiences, challenges, and triumphs. This human connection can resonate deeply with prospective employees, families, and the broader community.
- Leverage Digital Platforms Meet your audience where they are. Share stories through social media, websites, and streaming platforms to maximize reach and engagement. Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok can be particularly effective in connecting with younger audiences.
- Involve Your Team Engage current caregivers in the creation process. When staff feel invested in a project, their enthusiasm and authenticity will shine through. Additionally, involving them can create a sense of pride and ownership that improves morale.
- Promote the Value of Caregiving Use storytelling to emphasize the broader societal impact of caregiving. Show how caregivers contribute to the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. This can help shift public perception and attract individuals who are looking for meaningful work.
- Collaborate with Stakeholders Partner with industry associations, educational institutions, and media outlets to amplify the reach of your storytelling efforts. Collaboration can also provide access to resources and expertise that enhance the quality of your project.
A Step Toward Change
The People Worth Caring About docuseries is a reminder of the power of storytelling in shaping perceptions and inspiring action. For the nursing home profession, it offers a blueprint for addressing one of the industry’s most pressing challenges—building a sustainable workforce of skilled and compassionate caregivers.
By investing in similar projects, providers can not only attract and retain the next generation of caregivers but also elevate the public’s understanding and appreciation of this essential profession. Together, we can ensure that the people worth caring about include the caregivers who make long term care possible.
